Legal Information Clinic

Since 1985, our clinic provides legal resources and information to members of the community.

Legal information :

We assess your needs, answer your questions and direct you to the most relevant resource:

  • In person from Tuesday to Thursday from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • By telephone from Monday to Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 514 866-9941 extension 293.
  • Through the Intake form.

If required, our clinic offers confidential, one-on-one 30-minute consultations with experienced volunteer lawyers and notaries on a variety of topics.

You will receive legal information specific to your situation to help you understand your rights and guide you on the steps to take.

Please note : the Legal Information Clinic is not a Legal Aid Clinic . We only offer free legal information. According to the Québec Bar, legal information is a response that is limited to referring the caller to the legislative and regulatory provisions that may be relevant to the given subject.

Therefore, within the framework of this mandate, we cannot:

  • Represent participants in Court;
  • Draft formal notices, legal documents or any procedures.

Terms and conditions

  • Consultation times vary depending on the availability of lawyers and notaries.
  • Individual consultations are for women and their families only and the cost varies between $0 and $20 .
  • All our lawyers and notaries are members of the  Quebec Bar ou de la Chamber of Notaries of Quebec.
  • From October to March, a team  of law student volunteers  is also available  to provide resources and information through a partnership with the  National Pro Bono Student Network.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q  : Will the lawyer I meet represent me in court?
A  :  No , but the volunteer lawyer can inform you and direct you to professionals who can support you.

Q  : Will the lawyer I meet with prepare letters, legal documents or make requests for me?
A  :  No , but the legal information provided may help you better understand the nature of your problem, the law involved and the procedure applicable to your case.

Q  : Will I be able to meet with the volunteer lawyer multiple times?
A  :  Yes , if the lawyer deems it necessary.

Q  : Do your lawyers accept legal aid mandates?
A  :  No , the role of our volunteer lawyers is to provide legal information only. They will be able to direct you to legal aid offices in Montreal if you think you are eligible or to any other relevant resources.

  • The Community Justice Centre  in your area, open Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., offers free consultations by telephone. Montreal: 514-227-3782 (option 4).

  • Your neighborhood housing committee
  • Your local legal aid office
  • SOS domestic violence 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, at 1-800-363-9010.
