In Memoriam Gretta Chambers

Gretta Chambers portrait

The Women’s Y Foundation and YWCA Montreal pay homage to Gretta Chambers, a remarkable woman who made an immense contribution to building a better future for women and girls.

She was not only an inspirational leader, but also a former CBC journalist, chancellor of McGill, member of the Order of Canada, and Officer of the Ordre national du Québec. Moreover, she was a founding member of the Women’s Y Foundation and its very first president, in 1995. Mrs. Chambers firmly believed that women could and should take their place in society, hence her commitment to creating the Foundation, which now provides key financial support to the YWCA Montreal initiatives for women and girls. True to her convictions, Gretta Chambers left the presidency in 2003 only to get actively involved in a major fundraising campaign…

Mrs. Chambers, who always attended the Foundation’s various events, received a moving standing ovation during the YWCA Montreal’s 140th anniversary celebration, in 2015. She will receive a special tribute at the Women of Distinction Awards benefit on September 26, at Arsenal.

The Women’s Y Foundation, the YWCA Montreal, and the lives of thousands of women would not be the same without you, Gretta Chambers. Thank you.
